This was an integrated multi-family housing project located at the outskirts of Chennai. The site was a corner plot with its longer face oriented east-west. The project required us to deliver four energy-efficient apartments of approximately the same size, but comes across as a unified whole from the street. The design approach was to keep the plan simple and wrap the first envelope with a ‘second skin’. The second skin will help reduce the overall thermal transmittance through the envelope which has a direct impact on the a/c cooling loads and the energy efficiency of the building. However, introducing a second skin also reduces the daylight levels inside the rooms considerably. The second skin was thought of as continuous strip of flowing solids and voids enabling the creation of different spaces according to the functional space behind it. Hence a design approach was adopted whereby the second skin was punctured parametrically to allow for adequate daylight inside the rooms and also protect the indoors from excessive heat and rain.
