The site was small and an adjacent building almost blocks the harsh west sun. Hence, the floor plan of the apartments was made very space efficient. But the setback was used to juxtapose a shell of planter boxes and sunshades based on the thermal transmittance through the first envelope. However, the manner in which this gesture is performed is crucial for daylight levels inside the homes.

A parametric model was created whereby the location, size and depth of the planter boxes & sunshades were optimized for adequate daylight and also protect the indoors from excessive heat and rain. Eventually, the public image of the apartments will recede behind the plants and the homes will also claim privacy from the street.
