Located in a dense residential area, the building consists of 20 single/double bedroom apartments distributed over 4 floors. The volume has been developed mainly from its pragmatic functional request to host 5 tightly packed independent apartments with one common circulation at each floor. Given the prominent location of the site, the client wanted an innovative cost-effective facade concept that provides tenants ample daylight and privacy while protecting them from the harsh summer sun.We developed the concept of continuously changing balconies that wraps the apartments such that it offers different uses for various rooms in the apartment. The balcony’s floor plan and the parapet wall’s height are parametrically controlled to provide different degrees of shelter and intimacy. An evolutionary approach is adopted to optimize the sizing of the various openings that the balcony’s parapet wall create such that it helps to minimize sun exposure while not losing out on optimum daylight.
